1. OBTAIN YOUR MARRIAGE LICENSE:
Where to Get It: Marriage licenses in Utah can be obtained from any county clerk’s office in Utah. It doesn’t have to be from the county where you are getting married. Some couples opt to get it from Moab or another nearby town.
Requirements:
2. CHOOSING YOUR CEREMONY LOCATION:
Public Lands and National Parks: Moab is surrounded by breathtaking public lands, including Arches National Park, Canyonlands National Park, and numerous state parks and BLM (Bureau of Land Management) lands. Many couples choose these locations for their elopements due to the dramatic desert scenery.
Permit Requirements: For elopements in certain public areas (like Arches National Park or Canyonlands), you may need a permit. A special use permit is often required for official ceremonies. Fees can vary but usually range from $50 to $150 depending on the location and the specifics of the event.
State Parks or BLM Lands: These areas often have lower fees, but you still may need a permit if you’re bringing in any vendors (photographers, florists, etc.). It’s always a good idea to check with the specific location in advance.
Private Venues: Some couples choose to rent private properties or local venues, like small ranches or boutique inns, for their ceremony. In these cases, the venue often handles the permits, and there’s no need to deal with the national park permits.
3. OFFICIANT:
In Utah, you can marry yourself (with a self-solemnizing ceremony). However, if you want to have someone officiate your ceremony, it could be a minister, judge, or even a friend or family member who has been ordained online (such as through Universal Life Church).
You do not need to have a licensed officiant for your ceremony if you’re self-solemnizing, but it’s always a good idea to have someone involved to help guide the ceremony.
4. WITNESSES:
You need two witnesses for your ceremony. If you’re eloping in a remote location with no guest don’t worry, you still have options. I can sign it as well as other vendors you might have. You can also find people at the trailhead or ceremony location. Usually, people are excited to help!
The witnesses must be 18 years or older.
5. FILING YOUR MARRIAGE LICENSE:
After your ceremony, your officiant (or you if you’re self-solemnizing) will sign the marriage certificate.
You can either mail it to the county clerk’s office or return it in person to have your marriage officially recorded.
Once it’s filed, you’ll receive your official marriage certificate, which you can request for an additional fee (around $15-$25).
6. BEST TIME TO ELOPE IN MOAB AND SOUTHERN UTAH:
Weather Considerations: Southern Utah can be hot in the summer, with temperatures exceeding 100°F in July and August, so most couples opt for spring (April-May) or fall (September-November) when the temperatures are milder.
Crowds: Keep in mind that the national parks, especially Arches, can be busy. If you want to elope in a less crowded environment, consider choosing a weekday or a more remote location.
8. LEAVE NO TRACE:
Southern Utah is a sensitive environment, and you’ll want to follow Leave No Trace principles to protect the land and ensure the beauty remains for future generations. This means no littering, respecting wildlife, and leaving the areas as you found them.
9. ADDITIONAL TIPS:
Pack for the Elements: The desert can be unpredictable, so make sure you’re prepared with water, sunscreen, and layers for both sun and potential cold temperatures, especially in the morning or evening.
Transportation: Some elopement locations may require a hike or a 4×4 vehicle to access. Make sure you’ve got the right transportation for your chosen location.
Plan for an Unforgettable Experience: Beyond just the ceremony, consider creating an entire adventure out of your elopement day. Explore the parks, do a scenic drive, or even have a picnic with a view after your vows.
